DEM/ONE
Performed at Festival IT at the Fabbrica del Vapore Milano
10 June 2017
Choreographer: Marina Burdinskaya
Performers: Marina Burdinskaya / Angela Di Meo
Composer: Leonardo Bolgeri
The performance is a choreographic research inspired by the paintings of Vrubel, one of the greatest Russian painters of the Symbolist movement and of Art Nouveau. Vrubel later develop a penchant for fragmentary composition and an "unfinished touch". He painted sketches and watercolor illustrations for the long romantic poem of Michail Lermontov “Demon”.
The poem described the carnal passion of "an eternal nihilistic spirit" for a Georgian girl Tamara. Obsessed by the theme of the Demon Vrubel paints three pieces: “Demon Seated”, “Flying Demon” and “Demon Downcast”; in these three paintings Vrubel underlines the spiritual message.
The performance invites the audience to search for their demons.
